What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

Denmark's au pair scheme is a cultural exchange: a young foreign national lives with a Danish family, learns about Danish language and culture, and helps with ordinary domestic chores and childcare. Initial applicants must be at least 18 and not yet 30 when applying; an existing au pair changing host family may already have turned 30.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The host household needs at least one parent and a child under 18 registered at its address. At least one parent must have substantial knowledge of Danish culture and be able to convey it. The host must not be related to the au pair or share their nationality, and must provide the required accommodation and insurance.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

A binding au pair contract must be signed by the applicant and host family; where there are two host parents, both sign. The checklist also asks for educational documents, a birth certificate and a complete passport copy. The contract sets the framework for the placement.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The host provides free food and a separate room and must pay at least DKK 5,250 monthly pocket money at the 2026 level. Domestic duties are limited to 18-30 hours weekly and 3-5 hours daily. The permit does not allow paid employment outside the home, but qualifying unpaid voluntary work in an organisation or association is permitted.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

An au pair may stay for at most two years overall, further limited by the contract and the youngest host child turning 18. Changing families does not restart the two-year allowance: the au pair must terminate the old contract in writing, find a new family and apply within one month, and wait for the new permit before doing chores there. Initial applicants must not have children or have formed a family under the scheme's stated rules.
