What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Asylum under one of three sections of the Aliens Act: refugee status under the UN Refugee Convention (s. 7(1)), protected status (s. 7(2)) or temporary protected status (s. 7(3)); the residence permit is initially granted for a limited period.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Any foreign national in Denmark (regardless of how they entered) who has a well-founded fear of persecution under the UN Refugee Convention, or faces capital punishment, torture or inhuman/degrading treatment on return, including from severe instability and indiscriminate violence.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Only in Denmark, in person: at a police station or the police at Centre Sandholm (or, if already holding another permit, the police in one's district). Not possible from abroad or via Danish embassies.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm what happens after the protection request is made.
