Which family relationships qualify?

The spouse, cohabiting partner (living together at least 18 months) or minor child of the retired employee.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

A foreign national granted a residence permit after retiring from a position in Denmark with an international organisation or similar; the family member must already hold a Foreign Ministry permit under Aliens Act s. 47(1)(ii) as that person's accompanying family.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Marriage must be legal under Danish law: both spouses present at the ceremony, neither represented by someone else, both over 18 at the wedding; the marriage/relationship must be voluntary and not a marriage of convenience; children must be in the sponsor's partial or full custody and must not have started a family of their own.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

No public financial benefits for the spouse/partner or sponsor during the permit (condition of the permit); DKK 61,709.34 (2026 level) set aside to repay the municipality for any social benefits; a passed Prøve i Dansk 1 or equivalent Danish test; the spouse/partner must live with the sponsor at the same address.

Temporary permit for spouses/partners up to 2 years (extendable); children typically until 18 and not beyond the sponsor's permit; free to work without a work permit; permanent residence possible after 8 years (in some cases 4).
