How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The sponsor applies for an entry permit (a tourist visa cannot be used, except for sponsors employed by approved foreign-interest companies). Applications take up to nine months (90 days for intra-corporate transferees and researchers). The first permit lasts one year, is renewable, and cannot outlast the sponsor's permit. Residence has no time limit while conditions are met. Spouses and civil partners have direct access to employment on the same terms as the sponsor; spouses of long-term residents and intra-corporate transferees also have free access, including self-employment. The official source does not state how a family member gains an independent permit.
