What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A temporary stay document (safe-conduct) that lets foreigners remain lawfully in Colombia while their refugee (asylum) application is examined. It is not a visa.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Asylum applicants whose refugee-status application has been admitted, and their included beneficiaries.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm where and how protection is requested.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Valid 180 days, extendable for equal periods indefinitely until the asylum claim is decided; renewal must be requested at least one month before expiry. With the SC-2 the holder can access health (contributory or subsidised), basic/secondary education for minors, work (Decree 089 of 2025), and move freely within Colombia but must report a change of address in writing. If the applicant misses the interview, the SC-2 is cancelled. After a negative final decision, the SC-2 is cancelled and replaced by one for 30 days to regularise status.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Once the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorises it, issuance and delivery are handled by Migración Colombia. Renewals are requested from GIT Refugio with form DP-FO-278 sent to solicitudesentramite@cancilleria.gov.co. As an anti-fraud measure, Migración Colombia officials may never receive cash.
