For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A Temporary Resident Visa is the visitor visa placed in the traveller’s passport. Whether it is required depends on the travel document, issuing country, nationality and mode of arrival; eligible travellers may instead use an eTA or another exemption. The visa permits travel for border examination, not guaranteed admission. The officer decides single or multiple entry and validity.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

Visitor-visa application instructions cover tourism, family visits, visits to a sponsoring spouse or partner, compassionate visits and qualifying business visits, with a separate branch for joining a vessel. What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Most visits last up to six months, unless an officer sets a different period, taking support, the requested stay and passport validity into account. Visa validity is separate: up to ten years, limited by the passport, biometrics and the officer’s decision. For people required to provide biometrics under the Act, regulation 183(4)(c.1) also makes the ten-year anniversary of the latest collection an authorised-stay endpoint. The regulation retains separate extension rules; this is not a universal biometrics requirement or an automatic ten-year stay.

If you do not get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until the expiry of your biometrics or your passport expires, whichever comes first. Super visa holders who enter Canada after June 22, 2023 can stay for 5 years. If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. Bring a valid travel document and evidence of sufficient money, a credible temporary visit and ties supporting departure. Funds depend on the visit length and accommodation, not one universal minimum. Carry an invitation if one was issued; children may need travel authorisation and custody or adoption documents. Medical or police documents can be requested. Until September 28, 2026 at 23:59:59 ET, the published Ebola document and boarding measures require separate checks against the stated residence and travel-history scope.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Apply through the appropriate IRCC online portal using the personalised checklist; specified disability/access and travel-document situations permit paper applications. The basic fee is CAD 100 per person, with biometrics where required. After online approval, follow the passport-submission instructions and wait for the visa to be placed in it before travelling. To stay longer after admission, apply separately for a visitor record before current status expires; IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days beforehand.
