For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

An eTA is normally required for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport, with exemptions including US citizens and lawful US permanent residents. Citizens of the 17 listed visa-required countries can apply for air travel if they also held a Canadian visitor visa in the last ten years or hold a US non-immigrant visa valid on the application date, and are coming temporarily. This includes Indonesia and Malaysia from May 26, 2026. Canadian citizens and permanent residents use their applicable Canadian travel documents, not an eTA.

American-Canadians can travel with a valid Canadian or U.S. passport. * Canadian permanent residents need a valid permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document . * Important – former residents of Canada: Permanent resident (PR) status does not expire. What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The eTA supports short visits to Canada and transit through Canadian airports. Qualifying business visits can include meetings, conferences, purchases, specified training and after-sales activities without entering the Canadian labour market. It is not a substitute for the work or study permit required for those longer activities; the selected visa-required-country instructions require the appropriate permit for work or study beyond six months.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

An eTA lasts up to five years or until its linked passport expires, whichever comes first, and permits repeated travel for short stays. Each stay is normally up to six months, not five years. The border officer can authorise a shorter or longer stay. Without a passport stamp, the usual limit is six months from entry or passport expiry, whichever is earlier. A new passport requires a new eTA.

    #### How long you can stay Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada. At the port of entry, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months. If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. If you arrive at an airport that uses primary inspection kiosks†www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca , ask the border officer after you finish at the kiosk.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Travel with the passport linked to the eTA; approval does not guarantee admission. Be ready to show funds, ties supporting departure and any invitation. A minor may need parental or guardian authorisation and custody or adoption documents. Through September 28, 2026, Ebola measures can suspend documents based on last residence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan or Uganda, not citizenship alone. Since July 20, foreign nationals who were in the DRC within 21 days cannot board a flight to Canada. Travellers affected by the immigration-document suspension can request an exemption, assessed case by case.

    ## Situations where you may need extra documents on arrival If either of the following situations applies to you or someone you’ll travel with, have the documents indicated in hand. ### You have a child under the age of 18 (a minor child) In Canada, a child under the age of 18 is considered a minor. You may need to show * a letter from one or both parents, or a legal guardian, that authorizes the minor child to travel to Canada, and * other documents, such as adoption papers or a custody decree, depending on if the minor child travels alone or not Find out more about minor children travelling to Canada #### You were invited to come to Canada If you got a letter from a person or company that invited you to Canada, bring that letter with you. A border services officer may ask to see it. Find out more about letters of invitation . ## You arrive in Canada A valid eTA and travel document don’t guarantee that you can enter Canada. ### We determine if you meet all entry requirements When you arrive, a border services officer will ask to see your passport and other travel documents. They’ll check your identity to make sure that you’re the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. * If you enter Canada at one of 10 major Canadian airports * Your fingerprints will be checked automatically at a primary inspection kiosk†www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca . * The system will check your identity against the information collected when your application was submitted. * If you enter Canada at smaller airports and all land ports of entry * Your fingerprints may be checked if we refer you to a secondary inspection†www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca , where a border services officer will use a fingerprint verification device to check your fingerprints. ## You enter Canada If you pass the identity check, health assessment, and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer may stamp your passport or let you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to 6 months. In some cases, the officer may limit or extend your time in Canada to cover the planned purpose of your visit. Ask questions if you’re not sure about something. You won’t be allowed into Canada if you give false or incomplete information. You must convince the officer that: * you’re eligible for entry into Canada * you’ll leave Canada at the end of your approved stay If you don’t obey the conditions of your temporary resident status, we’ll ask you to leave Canada. Most people asked to leave Canada have the right to a fair hearing to review the decision. To visit Canada, you will need to meet some basic requirements, such as: * have a valid travel document, such as a passport, * be in good health, * have no criminal or immigration-related convictions, * convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country, * convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit, and * have enough money for your stay. (The amount of money you will need can vary. It depends on things such as how long you will stay, and whether you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.) ### Inadmissibility

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Apply through the official online eTA form with a valid passport, email address and accepted payment card; the non-refundable fee is CAD 7 per person. Most decisions arrive within minutes, but some cases require more documents and take days. Check that the approved passport number matches exactly; an incorrect number or new passport requires a new application. To extend a visitor stay, apply for a visitor record before status expires. That record is not a visa and does not guarantee re-entry.
