Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes. A resident applicant must provide documents including an employment contract, and the work permit's validity cannot exceed the duration of the employment contract.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

What sets this category apart is personal status rather than skill: being a foreigner or East African Community citizen born in Burundi and still living there, or the spouse of a Burundian citizen living in Burundi who has kept their original nationality. The applicant must still provide the diploma or certificate required by the job.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permit is tied to the employment for which it was given: it may be cancelled if the holder stops or changes that employment, and a holder who changes employment must inform the immigration services in writing within 15 days and at the same time apply for another work permit. A spouse or child of a foreign worker, or of a citizen of an East African Community member state, who is not a Burundian citizen and finds a job in Burundi must apply for a work permit or special work authorisation. The official source does not state whether family members may accompany the holder.

Limits of the record
  • The official source does not state whether family members may accompany the holder.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The head of immigration services issues the work permit within 30 days of the application. A permanent work permit is issued to foreigners or citizens of East African Community member states who were born in Burundi and live there, to spouses of Burundian citizens who reside in Burundi and have kept their original nationality, and to a foreign or East African Community investor (or their representative) whose presence in Burundi is justified by managing their capital. However, the permit's validity cannot exceed the duration of the employment contract or the validity of the travel document or foreigner identity card. A holder who wishes to renew must do so one month before expiry.
