What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is temporary residence on humanitarian grounds for a victim of human trafficking, not a general visa or guaranteed protection decision. The law covers protection and assistance for recovery and return, or where the person’s stay is needed to cooperate with authorities investigating and prosecuting trafficking.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It applies to a foreign person who is a trafficking victim for the purposes stated in the law: protection and assistance for recovery/return, or a stay necessary for cooperation with competent authorities in investigation and prosecution. The law does not establish that every person in a trafficking situation automatically receives this residence permit.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The application is handled by the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs under the humanitarian-residence procedure. A suspected victim placed in a victim-support centre receives protected-person status for 30 days as a recovery and reflection period. The law also requires an assessment from the authority handling the relevant proceeding or a recommendation from another competent authority for the approval or extension in the listed cases.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After a permit is approved under this trafficking-victim provision, the law lists adequate and safe accommodation, urgent medical care, psychological assistance, information about legal status, legal aid on status matters, access to the labour market under the rules applicable to foreigners, and vocational training and education. A child with this permit has access to education.
