Which family relationships qualify?

A dependent permit covers an immediate family member of a Belize resident: spouse, child, parent or sibling. A dependent permit may also be issued to a person residing in Belize who is of retired age (55 or older), a disabled person, or a child under 5.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor must be a resident of Belize who is able to provide, and continue to provide, adequate accommodation for the dependent.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Relationship proof depends on the relationship claimed: a marriage certificate for a spouse; the child's birth certificate for a child; the applicant's own birth certificate for a parent; both the sibling's and the applicant's birth certificates for a sibling. Any certificate not in English must be translated by a proper authority and signed. If the dependent is a sibling under 18, a letter of authority from the child's parents is also required.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The sponsor's core support obligation is providing and continuing to provide adequate accommodation. The supporting documents include a letter of financial support and a recent bank statement.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The application is made at the Immigration Office with supporting documents (letter of financial support, photographs, birth/marriage certificate, letter of authority where applicable, passport, proof of Belizean identity, recent bank statement, and a 1-year return ticket); it is processed on submission and a Dependent Permit sticker is placed on the dependent's passport. The official source does not state how long the permit lasts, how it is renewed, or the rights it gives.
