Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

People who wish to stay in Austria register with the police at specific police stations or special reception centres ("Erfassungsstellen"). People already registered in Austria with a registered address (Meldezettel) receive their ID card ("Ausweis für Vertriebene") automatically by post, and an application is not necessary.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Once registered, the person has access to basic welfare support ("Grundversorgung", including accommodation, basic care and health insurance), education and other services. The person receives an ID card ("Ausweis für Vertriebene") which gives access to the job market; it is usually sent to the registered address, so the place of residence must be registered (Meldezettel), and a new address must also be registered. Family members of eligible persons are also entitled to temporary protection under certain conditions. The residence permit will automatically be extended to 4 March 2027.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

UNHCR Austria refers people to the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA), which provides an information sheet, FAQ and a multilingual registration form, to the Ministry of the Interior website and to the BBU website. People who lived in Ukraine without Ukrainian nationality or protection status there are referred to legal counselling NGOs for questions on residence permits or the asylum procedure. The official source does not state fraud or scam warnings.
