For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a visa to enter Austria. Nationals of other countries need a visa unless their state's Schengen visa requirement has been lifted by EU regulation, in which case entry is visa-free for up to 90 days per 180 days, provided no gainful employment is taken up.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Maximum stay is 90 days within any 180-day period. A holder is entitled to enter and stay across the Schengen States provided the Schengen Borders Code Article 6 conditions are met and the visa carries no territorial restriction. A stay of more than 90 days requires a visa D instead.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Admissibility requires plausibility of the trip's purpose, sufficient funds for living and travel from the applicant's own assets or income (or a sponsor's electronic declaration of sponsorship if not), willingness to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires, and valid travel medical insurance (minimum EUR 30,000 coverage).

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The visa application is lodged at the competent Consulate; it is admissible only if lodged within six months and at least 15 calendar days before the trip, with the correct form, a passport valid under the stated conditions, and the fee paid (EUR 90; EUR 45 for travellers aged 6-12). Processing normally takes up to 15 calendar days. There is no legal entitlement to the visa. The official source does not state when a stay can be extended or changed.
