What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The applicant must have a fixed and regular income to meet living costs without welfare aid, equal to or above the standard income rate; in 2026 this was € 1,308.39 for singles, € 2,064.12 for married couples and an additional € 201.88 for each child. How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

First applications are, as a matter of principle, filed with the competent Austrian embassy or consulate abroad, which forwards them to the authorities in Austria; some family members, such as those entitled to enter without a visa, may apply in Austria after legal entry and during their legal stay. The authority must decide without undue delay, but not later than six months after receipt. The application fee is € 218. Family members must usually provide evidence of German at A1 level when first applying, with exemptions including family members of holders of a Red-White-Red Card for Very Highly Qualified Workers, an EU Blue Card or a settlement permit for researchers. The Red-White-Red Card plus allows time-limited settlement and gives unrestricted access to the labour market. Residence titles are, as a matter of principle, granted for twelve months; the Red-White-Red Card plus is issued for three years if the family member has completed Module 1 of the Integration Agreement and has resided lawfully in Austria without interruption during the previous two years. For family members of EU Blue Card or Red-White-Red Card holders, its duration depends on the validity of the sponsor’s permit (except where the sponsor was entitled to asylum or subsidiary protection). After five years of lawful settlement without interruption, a Long-term resident – EU title may be applied for if the general requirements are met and Module 2 of the Integration Agreement has been completed.
