How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The family must file an application at an Austrian embassy and must start this within three months after the sponsor has received the positive asylum decision; filing the application with the embassy is sufficient to meet this deadline. The Austrian Red Cross can help with the application. The Austrian Parliament reported on 17 December 2025 that recognised refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection may bring family members to Austria only in a few exceptional cases: the regulation suspending family reunification entered into force on 3 July 2025 and was extended until 2 July 2026, and the Asylum Act would in principle allow a further extension until the end of September 2026. The checked official sources do not state whether the suspension was extended beyond 2 July 2026. The official sources checked do not state what rights the family member receives or how long the status lasts.
