What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

The five years of residence must be lawful and continuous. Under Section 53a(2) of the Settlement and Residence Act (NAG), continuity of residence in Austria is not interrupted by absences of up to a total of six months a year, by absences to perform military obligations, or by one single absence of at most twelve consecutive months for important reasons such as pregnancy and childbirth, serious illness, study, vocational training or a professional posting.
