For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

All non-citizens need a visa or permission to enter Australia. The Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) Australian Government endorsed events stream is a visa for people who come to Australia to participate in certain events endorsed by the Australian Government, currently the Rugby League World Cup 2026, for which the applicant must be invited by the Australian Rugby League Commission; it can be applied for in or outside Australia. Applications for the Australian Government Endorsed Events (COVID-19 Pandemic event) visa closed on 1 February 2024.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The permitted purpose is to travel to or stay in Australia specifically to participate in the endorsed event (currently the Rugby League World Cup 2026), with the holder free to travel to and from Australia as many times as wanted during the visa's stay period.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The stay length is tied to the duration of the endorsed event, or up to 4 years depending on circumstances; the genuine-temporary-entrant requirement means the department generally does not let a temporary resident extend their stay in Australia beyond 4 years by applying for this visa again.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The applicant must have an invitation/endorsement to take part in the specific event, enough money to support themselves, adequate health cover for the whole stay, and must meet health and character requirements; the department also assesses genuine temporary entry by considering the applicant's situation, immigration history and compliance with visa conditions, and, if applying while already in Australia, requires either a current substantive visa or one that ceased within the last 28 days.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Applicants apply online and must hold a letter of endorsement from an approved organisation; the visa is free for Rugby League World Cup 2026 participants, with limited exemptions to the full cost for others not otherwise eligible for a free visa. Applicants aged 18 or over must sign the Australian Values Statement, must have no unpaid debt to the Australian Government (or a formal repayment arrangement), and a prior visa cancellation or refused application may affect eligibility; for applicants under 18, everyone with parental responsibility must consent, and the visa might not be granted if not in the child's best interests.
