What exactly is the official special programme/status and why does it exist?
The Special Purpose Travel Authority (subclass 945) (SPTA) is a registration mechanism for eligible members of specific allied armed forces (and their dependants) who already hold the automatic Special Purpose visa 'prescribed status'. In limited circumstances it provides a visa grant number (VGN) that the person can show in VEVO to employers, education providers and other Australian organisations as evidence of their status — it exists to give these military members and dependants a checkable status record rather than being a separate substantive visa in its own right.

- The official site does not give SPTA-945 a distinct page — it documents it only as a registration sub-mechanism inside the general Special Purpose visa page (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/.../special-purpose-visa), shared with the separately-processed 'Special Purpose visa' route. This answer is scoped strictly to the SPTA-945-specific sentences on that shared page, not to the general Special Purpose visa content.

Members of the armed forces of Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America may be eligible to be registered for the Special Purpose Travel Authority (subclass 945) (SPTA).

In limited circumstances the SPTA provides a visa grant number (VGN) to eligible military members and their dependents. Eligible military members and their dependents can use the VGN in VEVO to show their status to employers, education providers and other Australian organisations.
