Applicants must have a nomination to work in an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, have at least 3 years relevant work experience in the nominated occupation, have a relevant skills assessment (unless exempt), work only for their sponsor or an associated entity (unless exempt), be under 45 years of age (unless exempt), and meet minimum standards of English language proficiency.

The applicant must be nominated by an employer whose business is lawfully operating in Australia and that is an approved work sponsor or has at least applied to become a standard business sponsor. The holder must only work in the nominated occupation and only for the nominating employer in regional Australia, and the visa might be cancelled otherwise.

This is a provisional visa allowing stay in Australia for 5 years from the date of grant, and it cannot be extended. If eligible, the holder can apply for permanent residence after holding the subclass 494 visa for 3 years; until then, the holder cannot be granted visas including subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme), subclass 189, subclass 190 or subclass 191 (Regional Provisional Stream).
