Is this for a founder, startup entrepreneur, self-employed person, freelancer, company owner or another business profile?

J.1 is Andorra's initial self-employed residence and work authorisation. This variant is for the liberal professional who practises a regulated profession in their own name rather than through a foreign-investment company. It authorises the holder to reside and to carry out a self-employed activity permanently while the authorisation is valid.

What must actually exist or be demonstrated: business plan, company, innovation, clients, contracts, economic activity, job creation or other substance?

The substance required is professional authorisation rather than a company. Within a maximum of 3 months from the date the immigration application is filed, the applicant must prove that they have obtained the government's authorisation to practise the liberal profession and, where applicable, registration with the corresponding professional association. The applicant must also actually carry out the self-employed activity, establish permanent residence in Andorra and fit within the quota set by regulation.

What investment, capital, income, revenue, funding or viability evidence is central to this pathway?

For the liberal professional the page sets out no investment threshold and no shareholding requirement; those apply to the separate foreign-investment variant of J.1, which requires a shareholding above 34% in an Andorran company and a 50,000 euro deposit with the Andorran Financial Authority. Documentation for the settlement of the AFA deposit is listed among the general documents, and professional standing is evidenced by a curriculum vitae with the original and photocopy of diplomas or other documents proving professional qualification.

Limits of the record
  • The page does not state whether the AFA deposit applies to a liberal professional who is not incorporating a company, and it publishes no income, turnover or viability threshold for this variant.

What business/self-employed activity may the holder conduct? Are there important restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

The authorisation permits residence and permanent self-employed activity while it is valid. The activity is limited by professional regulation: the liberal profession may only be practised once the government's authorisation to practise has been obtained and, where required, the applicant has joined the corresponding professional association. The official source does not state the family position.

What approval/application sequence applies, how long is the status granted, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction is officially stated?

The first authorisation lasts one year and is renewable three times for two-year periods. After seven years, successive renewals are issued for ten-year periods, except for nationals of states that have signed and ratified a convention with the Principality of Andorra, who follow the J.2 renewal procedure. Within three months of the grant the holder must register with the comu of the parish where they live and prove that registration within the same period.
