Is this for a founder, startup entrepreneur, self-employed person, freelancer, company owner or another business profile?

J.1 is Andorra's initial self-employed residence and work authorisation. This variant is for the company owner who reaches self-employment through a foreign investment: the applicant must have obtained the corresponding foreign-investment authorisation to incorporate an Andorran company in which they hold a shareholding above 34%, must have legally incorporated that company, and must hold a position on its administrative body.

What must actually exist or be demonstrated: business plan, company, innovation, clients, contracts, economic activity, job creation or other substance?

Real trading substance must exist. Within a maximum of 3 months from the date the immigration application is filed, the applicant must prove that the legally incorporated company holds a duly registered business that is actually operating in the Principality of Andorra. The applicant must also actually carry out a self-employed activity and establish permanent residence in Andorra, and must fit within the quota set by regulation.

What investment, capital, income, revenue, funding or viability evidence is central to this pathway?

The money conditions on this page are a shareholding threshold and a deposit. The applicant must hold a shareholding above 34% in the Andorran company, and must pay and deposit with the Andorran Financial Authority (AFA), at the same moment the immigration application is filed, the sum of fifty thousand euros (50,000 euros), unremunerated.

What business/self-employed activity may the holder conduct? Are there important restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

The authorisation permits the holder to reside and to carry out a self-employed activity permanently while it is valid. The activity is tied to the Andorran company: the applicant holds more than 34% of it, sits on its administrative body, and the company must hold a registered, operating business in Andorra. The official source does not state the family position.

Limits of the record
  • The page does not state whether the holder may carry out other activities or take employment, and it describes no family or dependant rights; family reunification runs through the separate B.1 route.

What approval/application sequence applies, how long is the status granted, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction is officially stated?

The first authorisation lasts one year and is renewable three times for two-year periods. After seven years, successive renewals are issued for ten-year periods, except for nationals of states that have signed and ratified a convention with the Principality of Andorra, who follow the J.2 renewal procedure. Within three months of the grant the holder must register with the comu of the parish where they live and prove that registration within the same period.
