For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Travellers need a Samoa 10-Day Visitor Permit, applied for and paid online before travel with American Samoa Immigration (Department of Legal Affairs). It is restricted by nationality and travel document: travellers must be Samoan-born citizens and hold a Samoa-issued passport. American Samoa Immigration reserves the right to deny a permit for any reason, including an untimely application or an application for someone previously excluded or deported.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The official page presents this as a visitor permit for Samoan-born citizens holding a Samoa-issued passport, with a roundtrip ticket showing travel within 10 days. It does not state which visit purposes are allowed, and it does not state any permission to work or study. The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the permitted purposes of the visit.

Limits of the record

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Carry the emailed Samoa 10-Day Permit and present it to an immigration officer on arrival. Alongside it, the documents the application is built on are identification such as a valid passport or document of identity valid at least 6 months after departure, a roundtrip ticket showing travel within 10 days, a confirmed hotel booking or verification of the name and location of the home if staying with family, and a local contact phone number. Arriving without an approved permit is a real risk: you may be turned away at any of the Ports of Entry in American Samoa and be required to return on the same vessel you embarked on.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Applications are made online before travel and paid by credit card; they must be submitted online within 3 business days prior to travel, and any application submitted later may not be processed. The fee is a $10 USD non-refundable fee. The 10-Day Permit cannot be extended.
