Key takeaway: Being over 40 changes some immigration routes, but it is not a country-wide verdict. Separate a legal age cut-off, fewer ranking points and an employer’s recruitment decision.

Identify what age actually changes in the route

“Too old to emigrate” is not a useful starting point. A specific programme can impose an age limit, award fewer age points, or add a financial condition. Recruitment is a separate decision and cannot be predicted from a visa checklist. Write down your age at the event that matters: application, invitation or first employment permission. Do the same for your partner’s independent application, if any. The examples below show why a country name alone is insufficient. They do not rank destinations or show that anyone over a particular age has been accepted.

United Kingdom: focus on the sponsored role and evidence

The Skilled Worker rules specify that an applicant must be at least 18. The reviewed age provision does not contain an upper age limit. The route nevertheless requires an approved sponsor, a confirmed eligible job, the applicable salary and English evidence, alongside the other application conditions. For an experienced worker, the practical first question is whether an employer has a suitable role and can sponsor it. A professional background can help present an application to employers, but it does not guarantee an offer or immigration approval. Check your actual occupation, certificate date and current route before assuming a salary or exemption applies.

Germany: older first-time skilled workers have a specific condition

Germany’s qualified-professional route requires a recognised or comparable qualification and a qualified job offer; regulated professions also need authorisation to practise. For a first grant under sections 18a or 18b once the applicant has completed their 45th year, section 18(2)(5) specifies a salary or adequate old-age provision condition. The federal portal gives the 2026 salary figure as €55,770 gross annually. The English portal says “over 45”; the statutory birthday wording is more precise and should guide a borderline case. Statutory discretion also exists in specified circumstances. Check the actual residence title, previous grants and accepted pension evidence with the competent authority before relying on an exception.

Canada: losing age points is different from an age prohibition

Canada’s Express Entry CRS awards age points within the overall ranking. At age 40, its table lists 45 points with an accompanying spouse or partner and 50 without one; at 45 or older, that age factor contributes zero. The rest of the profile is assessed separately. Zero age points is therefore a score outcome, not by itself a decision on an application. Calculate the complete profile rather than treating age as the only variable. Do not assume that a job offer adds the old CRS points: IRCC removed those points on 25 March 2025, while relevant programme job-offer conditions can still apply.

Australia: subclass 189 checks age at invitation

For the Skilled Independent subclass 189 Points-tested stream, the official age condition is under 45 when invited to apply. An expression of interest lodged earlier does not lock in age: if you turn 45 before the invitation, the page says you will not be invited under this stream. Turning 45 after the invitation is treated differently. This is not a rule for every Australian residence category. Keep the invitation condition distinct from points, skills assessment and the other requirements. A predicted invitation date is not reliable enough to support irreversible travel or financial plans.

Returning to university does not remove graduate age conditions

If you are considering a new degree as a way to move after 40, examine the permission after graduation before paying tuition. Australia’s Post-Higher Education Work stream generally uses age 35 or younger at application, with stated under-50 exceptions for qualifying research master’s or doctoral applicants and for Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders. An ordinary coursework master’s is not automatically covered by the research exception. An institution can offer a place without establishing that you will qualify for this later visa. Compare a funded academic plan and its immigration sequence; do not rely on a study-to-permanent-residence promise.

Your existing citizenship may remove the work-permit question

Begin with citizenship and rights you already hold. An EU national generally does not need a work permit to work in another EU country. A Portuguese citizen moving to Spain for work should therefore not start by buying a third-country work-visa application. Professional recognition, registration and other practical conditions may still require attention. If you intend to be economically inactive, residence conditions are different: official EU guidance describes sufficient resources and comprehensive health insurance. Free movement is not a promise that the state will finance relocation. Keep workers, students and inactive residents distinct when checking the conditions for the intended stay.

Build a move that remains viable for your household

Prepare a shortlist of routes whose age condition you can document, then check the offer or funds and the remaining requirements. Request written clarification of employer-paid costs and employment start dates. For a household, compare your partner’s actual permission, children’s practical needs, insurance and a return plan. Do not count a partner’s right to work until the relevant permission is confirmed. These are planning checks, not additional immigration rules invented for this guide. Use the questionnaire to organise your goal and context alongside recorded route information. Before spending on an application, verify the current conditions and resolve any route-specific age or pension question.

Questions before acting

Can someone over 40 still explore work routes abroad?

Yes, but check the particular route. Some impose an age cut-off, others reduce points or apply pension and salary conditions. No country-wide acceptance promise follows from these examples.

Does Canada refuse Express Entry applicants as soon as they turn 45?

The reviewed CRS table gives zero age points from 45. That is a scoring fact, not an automatic refusal decision. Programme eligibility and the complete profile must be assessed separately.

Can I enter Australia’s subclass 189 pool at 44 and apply after 45?

The relevant event is invitation. Turning 45 before an invitation means you will not be invited under the reviewed Points-tested stream; turning 45 after invitation is treated differently.

Does the UK Skilled Worker route have an upper age limit?

The reviewed route age provision states at least 18 and does not specify an upper limit. This does not remove the sponsored job, salary, English or other application requirements.

What extra issue should an older first-time skilled worker check in Germany?

For a first grant under the reviewed sections 18a/18b once age 45 is completed, check the salary or adequate pension-provision condition. The federal portal gives €55,770 in 2026. The statutory wording, previous grants and any discretion need checking for the actual case.

Can any Australian master’s degree solve the graduate age limit?

No. The named under-50 degree exception is for qualifying research master’s or doctoral applicants. An ordinary coursework master’s does not by itself create that exception.

Should a Portuguese citizen apply for a Spanish work visa?

For work within ordinary EU free-movement rights, an EU national generally does not need a work permit. Check registration and professional requirements for the actual situation instead of assuming a third-country visa is needed.

Corrections in this revision

The previous version included statements without sufficient direct support. This revision removes or corrects:

  • Removed unsupported country lists asserting every work or passive-income visa has no age limit.
  • Separated Canada CRS age score from programme rejection.
  • Clarified Australian subclass189 under45 at invitation, not an undifferentiated “all skilled visas capped44” rule.
  • Added Germany first-work-entry salary/pension condition omitted by old article.
  • Removed claims that experience automatically compensates for age or guarantees sponsorship.
  • Added graduate-visa age warning and explicit citizenship/free-movement first check.
  • Removed old working-holiday blanket age ranges and unsourced recruiting-bias assertions.
  • Corrected the German English portal’s imprecise “over45” label against official section18(2)(5), which refers to completion of the45th year and first grant under18a/18b.

Review scope: legal and financial statements in this revised article. Recheck on a provider, professional, immigration or tax-rule change; reuse of dated figures requires a new check.
